Dental health is often overlooked when it comes to our pets, but it’s extremely important for their overall health. We strongly recommend annual cleanings and exams for all cats and dogs.
A thorough cleaning every year coupled with brushing your pet’s teeth at home and offering dental chews can help reduce the buildup of harmful bacteria in the gums. This bacteria, when left unchecked, can spread to your pet’s vital organs and cause a host of other health conditions. Certain breeds of dogs, including Dachshunds, Pugs, and Chihuahuas, are more susceptible to gum disease and may require more frequent dental checkups.
Your West Oaks doctor will look inside your cat’s or dog’s mouth at every wellness visit, but a thorough dental cleaning requires general anesthesia and must be scheduled in advance.
During a dental cleaning, one of our doctors will remove plaque and tartar from your pet’s teeth, probe between the teeth and under the gums, clean and polish the teeth, perform dental x-rays to look for problems beneath the surface, remove cracked or bad teeth, and inspect the entire mouth for lumps or other abnormalities.
Please give us a call if you notice any of the following symptoms between visits:
- Chronic bad breath
- Excessive drooling
- Pawing at the mouth
- Difficulty eating
- Loose or missing teeth
