Keeping Your Pets Healthy

Wellness care is essential, plain and simple. Our pets can’t tell us how they’re feeling or if their bodies are undergoing subtle changes. Annual checkups coupled with bloodwork and other diagnostic tests on a regular basis can spot trouble early on when a condition is typically more responsive and less costly to treat.

At West Oaks Animal Hospital, our approach to wellness is multipronged and includes a nose-to-tail examination and the following preventive measures when appropriate:

During your pet’s checkup, your West Oaks veterinarian will discuss appropriate vaccines and answer any question you might have. The rabies vaccine is currently the only one mandated by Texas law. We strongly recommend the leptospirosis vaccine for dogs. Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial infection that can spread quickly in hot, humid climates. And if your cat likes to spend time outdoors, we recommend the added protection of the feline leukemia vaccine.

Parasite Control

Flea and tick control in Houston is serious business, since these little bugs thrive in our warm, moist climate. Your West Oaks doctor can discuss preventive options with you and help you determine which product is best for your pet. Heartworm prevention is also critical for Houston area pets because heartworms spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes.

We never expect our pets to run away, but if that should happen, a microchip can improve your pet’s chances of being returned home safely. The procedure is fast, and all your pet feels is a quick pinch. Ask us about microchipping at your pet’s next wellness visit.

Nutritional Counseling and Weight Management

Pets with chronic conditions such as diabetes and other kidney disorders, obesity, and allergies may benefit from special diets. Your West Oaks veterinarian will discuss your pet’s needs with you and help you choose the best foods for your cat or dog.
